The extension is primarily reserved for citizens of Ghent, and Ghentish companies and non-profit organizations that focus on the region of Ghent. Furthermore, the City was given priority to choose a series of city-related domain names, setting a good example. All citizens of Ghent will be able to access stad.gent, toerisme.gent and (unfortunately) also belastingen.gent. So, both citizens and companies can present themselves as Ghentish, through and through, with their own .GENT domain name.
The .GENT domain names are not sold directly by us (the .GENT registry), but by so-called registrars. These are companies that are affiliated with us and that are allowed to sell .GENT domain names or integrate them in an existing product.
In order to become a .GENT registrar, it is necessary to have an ICANN accreditation. Then, you can sell .GENT domain names directly to end users. Starting in 2014, .GENT will be an indispensable extension!
A list of more then 500 domain names, the so called Premium domain names, were blocked for registration at the launch of .GENT. Now, these domain names are finally being released.
This is the moment we have all been waiting for: today, the new .GENT domain extension has become available to all.
